Like the animals, the indigenous and endemic plant species on Mauritius have dwindled since the arrival of colonists. Today, the original hardwood forests are really only found on the tops of the mountains and tucked away in gorges.

To see these indigenous plants and endemic birds you need to pull on your walking shoes and get into the Mauritius Parks and Reserves like the famous Black River Gorges National Park, or visit the conservation projects like Ile aux Aigrettes.

As you'd expect, the island is very green and gardens are full of the usual tropical offerings like bougainvillea and hibiscus.

The marine life in Mauritius is one of its star attractions, thanks to the coral reef that protects much of the island, making diving and snorkelling very popular.
