Local Mauritian cuisine is an inspiring combination of Indian, Creole, French and Chinese influences that are adapted to the local produce. Nearly every restaurant will list Indian, Creole, Chinese and European dishes.

As you would expect from a tropical island, the seafood is excellent and is prepared in a number of ways; in soups and curries as well as grilled or baked.

Meats, such as beef, chicken and pork are prepared in traditional curries and Chinese stirfries. Venison and Wild Boar are often served at special occasions but are found on many restaurant menus too.

Street vendors in Port Louis and Grand Baie often sell substantial meals, whereas the beach vendors will crack open a coconut for you or create a carved, pineapple-lollipop.

As for drinking, water may be untreated and therefore not safe to drink. If in doubt, stick to bottled water (or the typical, locally made rum!).

Avoid dairy products, as they are not pasteurised, and peel fruit and vegetables before you eat them.
