Malaria: The risk is minimal but there may be a small risk in rural areas of Mauritius Island itself, it should be noted that no cases have been reported since 1998. There is no risk in Rodriguez Island which lies to the east.
Rabies.
Generally, Mauritians are friendly and law-abiding people, but as you would anywhere, you should take a few basic precautions. For your added security, a tourist police service has been set up in the tourist zones.
Basic precautions include: Keep an eye on all your personal belongings at all times; be careful when withdrawing money from a cash point; avoid wearing expensive jewellery; do not leave anything inside your car.
Keep your passports, plane tickets, jewellery of value and large sums of money in safe custody.
Use only recognised operators or suppliers for trips or purchases.
