If you need a break from sunning yourself on the beaches of Mauritius, head for the parks and reserves of the interior.

The interior of Mauritius, particularly the south, is quite mountainous with many forested valleys, large rivers, sparkling clear streams and unexpected waterfalls.

The exotic foliage is lush and tropical and if you're lucky you could spot some of the rare birdlife, such as the pink pigeon and the Mauritius kestrel, that have been brought back from near extinction.

The Black River Gorges National Park has many spectacular walks, there are guided hikes of varying length at L'Etoile and the Domaine du Chasseur offers some easy trails.

Climb the imposing Le Morne Peninsula, using the ropes provided to scramble up the steep slopes.

If you don't feel like walking there are many other ways to see the beautiful tropical scenery of Mauritius. Get the adrenalin flowing on a quad bike or zip high above rivers and waterfalls while zip lining.

There are many more wilderness areas in the interior of Mauritius than you would imagine, so get out and start exploring.
