Mauritius is almost completely encircled by a coral reef which is home to many colourful sponges, spikey sea anemones and a variety of multi-coloured fish such as the trumpet, clown and box fish, as well as scorpion, lionfish, and stonefish.
Moray eels and various crustaceans also thrive on the coral reef. These colourful creatures and ornamental vegetation provide a wonderful show to those who dive or snorkel.
Wahoo, shark, barracuda, marlin, sailfish, tuna and other large fish provide the big game fisherman with great sport.
In 1980, The Mauritius Marine Conservation Society was founded in order to highlight public awareness of damage to the coral reef. Their work includes the creation of artificial reefs by sinking barges in areas where the reef has been destroyed thus providing a fresh habitat for marine life.
Shell and coral collecting has also resulted in a population decline and the sale of shells from Mauritian beaches has been banned.
