When it comes to the four major travel regions of this island paradise there are a few points to keep in mind.
The general consensus is that west is best. Sheltered from the south-east winds the sea is less rough and the diving is better. Expect more people, jet skis, night clubs and lively fun.
With a dramatic and rocky coastline the east region plays the part of the tempestuous but beautiful rebel. The region is prone to harsher weather conditions, but if you manage to visit at the right time the experience is the best possible in Mauritius.
Newly built up, the south region is less commercial and the only place that has waves (thanks to a far-stretching reef).
The north is where tourism shines brightest. If you want to explore this tropical island you'll want to base yourself in Grand Baie. This harbour region offers tourists access to all Mauritian delights.
