Enter the world of the coral reef, explore the nooks and crannies in your search for moray eel or chase the multi-coloured marine life through the anemones.
In Mauritius divers have the opportunity to explore wrecks from the 18th and 19th centuries, as well as those sunk more recently to create artificial reefs - there's no better way to get up close and personal with the awesome coral reefs that ring Mauritius than scuba-diving.
For beginners, Mauritius hotels often first offer diving lessons in the swimming pool before venturing deeper. If you're an advanced diver, remember to bring your certification as proof.
Visibility near the reef is best in winter, whereas summer is a better time for offshore dives. With surface water temperatures ranging from 22 to 27 degrees centigrade, a wetsuit is not necessary in either season.
Most diving schools in Mauritius, whether independent or allied to a hotel, are affiliated to the Mauritius Scuba Diving Association, which ensures that international standards are adhered to.
For those who aren't qualified scuba-divers or just don't feel like lugging lots of equipment around, snorkelling is a great alternative. People of all ages and abilities can explore the colourful reefs and lagoons with no more than flippers and a mask and snorkel.
Unlike scuba-diving, most Mauritius hotels don't charge for the use of their snorkelling equipment. However, if snorkelling is something you enjoy it's worthwhile bringing your own equipment, or buying some in the local towns.
Remember to use protective gloves and footwear to guard against sharp coral, sea urchins and other dangers.
