Although it's long extinct, the dodo has become the mascot of Mauritius. You'll find it on T-shirts, in wood or in metal, in every size and color.

For a slightly less stereotypical souvenir, you can visit one of the model ship factories in Mauritius. All the ships are handmade in wood and are recreated from the original plans.

If your purse is a little larger you can buy duty-free gold, pearls or diamonds in one of the shops in Floreal, Port Louis or Grand Baie. (How about a little dodo in gold?)

For those with smaller budgets, there is always a good bottle of local rum or Mauritian food specialities.
