Mozambique » Introduction

Mozambique is a ribbon-like country, with a 2 500km coastline lapped by the warm waters of the Indian Ocean. So it's hardly surprising then that when most people think of Mozambique, the first image that springs to mind is sandy, palm-fringed beaches.

Tropical Island Holiday

Delicious seafood, sunny skies and the soft sand of the Bazaruto Islands, Quirimbas Islands, Inhaca Island, Inhambane and Pemba have made Mozambique beach holidays legendary.

While islands are the perfect place to relax, there's also plenty to do with world-renowned deep-sea fishing, and clear water dotted with coral reefs waiting to be explored on scuba-diving and snorkelling trips.

Exclusive island lodges sit right on the beach. Choose one of the luxurious lodges on Benguerra Island in the Bazaruto Archipelago, or have the whole place to yourself on tiny Medjumbe Private Island in the more remote Quirimbas Archipelago.

Honeymoon Hideaway or Family Escape

For sheer romance you can't do much better than a tropical island; add to that the buzz created by luxurious new lodges like Azura (on Benguerra Island)- which sprung onto Conde Nast's 2008 Hot List - and it's clear why Bazaruto and the Quirimbas are rapidly becoming Africa's hippest honeymoon destination.

A handful of these magical Indian Ocean islands are also perfect for a Mozambique family holiday with plenty of things for kids to do, safe sea to splash about in and family-friendly accommodation - we even have a couple of Mozambique villas which sleep 4 to 6 people.

More Than a Beach Holiday

While in Africa we'd highly recommend some big game viewing. Combine a Mozambique beach holiday with a safari in neighbouring South Africa. It's easy to hop between the two, with direct flights from Kruger airport to Vilanculos, the gateway to the Bazaruto Archipelago.

If you're looking for a bit of local culture, stop over in Mozambique's capital Maputo. The streets are lined with interesting colonial architecture, and it's still possibly the best place to tuck into a huge plate piled high with famous LM prawns!

And for those interested in the country's multi-layered past, you really should visit Ibo Island - it's sure to be a highlight of your Mozambique beach holiday.
