Mozambique has three international airports: Maputo International Airport, Vilanculos Airport and Pemba Airport.
Mozambique's national carrier is Linhas Aéreas de Mozambique (LAM).
International air carriers: only Air Portugal (TAP) and South African Airways (SAA) fly direct into Mozambique and into Maputo.
Domestic air services operate between Beira, Maputo, Nampula, Pemba, Quelimane, Tete and Vilanculos. Many charter airlines have scheduled services and these are usually preferable.
There are several routing options between South Africa and Vilanculos; gateway to the Bazaruto Archipelago.
1. Daily flights from Johannesburg
2. Twice weekly flights from the Kruger National Park
3. Regular flights from Durban
4. Regular flights from Swaziland
Flight access to Pemba and the Quirimbas Archipelago is available from Johannesburg, Maputo and Dar Es Salaam.
There are five direct flights a week from Johannesburg on either Mozambique Airlines (LAM) or South African Airways. Flights generally land in Pemba around lunch, leaving more than enough time to catch a light aircraft or helicopter transfer directly to the Quirimbas islands.
Flights from Dar es Salaam to Pemba leave four times a week, and there are also four return flights weekly. Flights there are very quick but return flights can take nearly three hours.
We don't book flights alone, but we'll put together a Mozambique beach holiday that includes flights, transfers and accommodation on a magnificent stretch of footprint-free sand. Have a look at our recommended Mozambique tours for barefoot luxury at its best.
