The now peaceful Mozambique remains a very poor country, having not recovered from Portuguese colonialism, great disinvestment following independence, and two protracted civil wars.

However, from 1994 to 2004 its GDP growth averaged 8.2%, despite the cyclone of 2001 which caused huge flooding and reduced GDP to 2.1% for the year. Much of this growth is fuelled by investment from tourism.
