The vast majority of tourists to Mozambique head for the beaches and islands. Given the decades of war and social upheavals plus the poor infrastructure of inland Mozambique, there are few other places that hold an attraction for visitors.

For the classic tropical islands of coral reefs, waving palms and white sandy beaches, most people head for the Bazaruto Archipelago, or the even more remote northern islands of the Quirimbas Archipelago.

The remote north also offers the deserted beaches of the Pemba Coast and Nacala Coast, the latter offering access to Mozambique Island. Surfers and anglers head south for the action-packed resorts of Tofo Beach and Barra Beach while Inhaca Island, with its reefs and good birding opportunities, is only 40 km off the coast of Maputo.

The only world heritage site in Mozambique currently is Mozambique Island. Until the opening of the Suez Canal in the late 1800s, this was the capital of Portuguese Mozambique and a focal point of Mozambique's trade and industry.
