Before hopping across to the Bazaruto Islands, you could spend a night or two on the Mozambique mainland, in the sleepy seaside town of Vilanculos.

Wandering round the town and browsing local markets will give you a feel for mainland culture. Mozambicans are really friendly, and you'll probably soon find yourself with a Pied Piper trail of giggling kids practicing their English language.

For more insight into the Mozambican people, read through the history section of our Bazaruto travel guide, and find out about when the first Arab dhows cruised these waters.

Vilanculos town is certainly a taste of 'real Africa' - a spicy stimulant for the ears and eyes! - Go2Africa safari expert, Catherine Fouche
