Around the Bazaruto Archipelago, local fishermen still use ancient dhows as their main form of transport.

There's something incredibly peaceful about taking to the ocean on a white-sailed dhow, listening to its wooden mast creak as a light breeze catches the sail, and toasting the end of another blissful day on the Bazaruto islands while the sky turns unreal shades of orange.

G&Ts flowed as the sun dipped brilliant orange behind the dhow's triangular sail. We lounged on plump cushions, lulled by the sound of the ocean sloshing against the ancient wooden hull ... - Sandra Mallinson, 'Bazaruto: Mozambique's Playground' (Jan 2008)

To help you relax into your island holiday, most of our recommended places to stay on Benguerra Island offer a free sunset dhow cruise.
