Bazaruto Archipelago » Getting There

By Air

Mozambique's national carrier is Linhas Aéreas de Mozambique (LAM). South African Airways, Pelican Air, Air France, Air Mauritius, Ethiopian Airlines, and TAP Air Portugal also fly to Mozambique.

The easiest way to get to the islands is to fly from South Africa to Vilanculos: the gateway to the Bazaruto Archipelago.

South Africa - Vilanculos

From Johannesburg:
Pelican Air operates daily flights from OR Tambo International Airport. (Approx. 2 hrs).

From the Kruger area:
Pelican Air operates twice weekly flights from Kruger Mpumalanga International (KMIA). (Approx. 1 hr. 20 mins).

Regular flights are also available from Durban and Swaziland on Swazi Express.

Transfers To The Islands:

  • Indigo Bay flies guests from Vilanculos airport.
  • Benguerra Lodge flies guests from Vilanculos airport.
  • Azura operates helicopter transfers to their lodge.
  • Marlin Lodge operates 20-minute boat transfers to their lodge on Benguerra Island.

Airport Tax

You'll need to pay both an arrival and departure tax at Vilanculos Airport.

  • Domestic = US$ 8 pp (upon arrival)
  • Immigration = US$ 3 pp (upon arrival and departure)
  • International = US$ 20 pp (upon departure)

By Road

Johannesberg - Vilanculos

Although the highway from Johannesburg to Maputo is in good condition, things can get pretty hairy from there, and we wouldn't recommend travelling by road to Vilanculos.

Roads in Mozambique are generally in poor condition, and although the road is tarred, you need to keep a sharp eye out for people, animals and very large potholes.
