You don't have to don scuba gear to experience the kaleidoscope of colour just beneath the ocean's shimmering surface. There are a number of excellent snorkelling sites in the Bazaruto Archipelago including 'The Aquarium', a sheltered pool within Two Mile Reef which lives up to both its name and reputation.
The adventure often begins on your boat ride from Benguerra Island or Bazaruto Island: pods of dolphin are frequently spotted playing in the calm bays, and occasionally the large shape of a whale breaks the ocean's surface.
Colours are that much brighter in the clear shallow water, and it's easy to lose yourself in this crazy world of curious clowns, rainbow-coloured parrots, striped snappers and graceful angels all swimming among brain-shaped corals, and the vivid tentacles of anemones.
5 species of turtle have been seen around the reef and giant rays frequently lurk on the sandy ocean floor.
Our first stop was Two Mile Reef where we donned flippers and masks and slid into the water to explore. Two hours and one sun-burnt bottom later, I climbed back onto the boat, eyes bulging with disbelief ... - Alison Westwood, Mozambique's Treasure Island, March 2006
Another highlight of a Bazaruto snorkelling trip is visiting Pansy Island on your return boat journey. This sandy spit, seemingly in the middle of the ocean, is a shell-collector's treasure trove.
There are diving centres equipped with fins, snorkels and masks, as well as scuba-diving equipment, at all our recommended Bazaruto accommodation.
Bear in mind that, because of the boat trip, you'll be charged extra for snorkelling excursions - but the experience is well worth it.
