The Bazaruto National Park was set up as early as 1971, to protect the islands' land and marine animals.

Wildlife on the Islands

The Bazaruto islands' freshwater lakes are home to crocodiles (some as big as 2.5 metres in length!), while along island shores you can spot three varieties of turtle, including the rare loggerhead.

Inland, indigenous forests and grasslands are home a variety of wildlife including suni antelope, red duiker, bushbuck and the samango monkey.

Bazaruto Marine Life

Of course, Bazaruto's trump card is the surrounding ocean. Clear water, warm currents, and reefs teeming with tropical fish make this is one of Mozambique's best locations for scuba-diving and snorkelling.

Colourful species you can expect to below the waves include parrot fish, angel fish, puffers and comical clown fish. What's more, the game fishing is excellent, with large black and striped marlin and evasive barracudas.

Humpback and various dolphin species are often sighted. The area also supports the endangered Dugong, a sea mammal often confused with the manatee (sea cow). These herbivorous mammals (one of only two aquatic mammals classified as herbivores) belong to the order Sirenia, and feed in shallow water.
