Apart from a scattering of lodges and the thatched huts of local fishermen, there has been relatively little development on either Benguerra Island or Bazaruto Island, making the Bazaruto Archipelago the ideal Indian Ocean destination for those wanting to find a piece paradise all for themselves.

The Bazaruto Islands, fringed by deserted beaches of the softest sand and the sparking Indian Ocean, are protected within the Bazaruto Marine National Park. Beneath the waves, colourful clouds of tropical fish dart amongst coral reefs, while further out to sea massive game fish patrol the deep Mozambique channel.

Our Bazaruto wildlife guide also looks at the environment of the islands themselves, from the freshwater lakes inhabited by large crocodiles to the varied birdlife found in the natural forests and along the islands' shorelines.

We are currently involved in monitoring dugongs [a rare aquatic mammal], the protection of bird habitats, coral reef and fish catch monitoring, and are exploring turtle conservation possibilities. - Sandra Mallinson, 'Ecotourism Gets a Luxury Makeover', April 2008.
