The geography of Bazaruto Archipelago
This map of the Bazaruto Archipelago shows the 5 jewel-like islands which broke away from the mainland thousands of years ago, and now lie scattered around 30km off the southern coast of Mozambique. The closest mainland town is Vilanculos, which is known as the gateway to the Bazaruto Archipelago.
As you can see from the map, Bazaruto is the largest of the islands, at around 37km long and up to 7km wide. Bazaruto Island forms part of the Bazaruto National Park, and the Indigo Bay Island Resort & Spa is located on the island's south-western shore, near a wide sweep of pure white beach.
Below Bazaruto is the second largest island, Benguerra; around 11km long and 5.5km wide. Azura, Benguerra Lodge and Marlin Lodge are all found on the western shore of the island. Benguerra Island also forms part of the Bazaruto Marine Park.
There's no accommodation on either Magaruque or Santa Carolina, and tiny little Bangue can be seen right at the bottom of the Bazaruto map.
