Benguerra, the second largest island in the Bazaruto Archipelago, is less than a kilometre south of Bazaruto Island. Like its neighbour, it also has high dunes, inland lakes and long wide beaches - perfect for a Mozambique beach holiday.
There are no big resorts on the island, instead there are luxurious lodges and Mozambique villas which open onto the soft sand and turquoise sea.
Two Mile Reef, which lies two miles east of Benguerra, offers some of the best scuba-diving in Mozambique with beautiful staghorn corals and tropical fish: from tiny clownfish to moray eels and black-tipped reef sharks.
The reef's large, protected pool, called the Aquarium, is also a must for snorkelling.
Fishing by lure and by fly is extremely popular, and guests staying at Benguerra lodges frequently break big-game fishing records. In Mozambique, fishing is carefully monitored and all catches are tagged and then released.
Benguerra Island has a rich cultural life with dhows regularly sailing past. Wake up early and you might see them sharing their catch on the beaches.
There is a total of around 164 species of birds on Benguerra, and the small patch of indigenous forest near the north point thrills with their sounds and those of squirrels and monkeys.
On our first night on Benguerra we were treated to a sunset cruise. G&Ts flowed as the sun dipped brilliant orange behind the dhow's triangular sail. We lounged on plump cushions, lulled by the sound of the ocean sloshing against the ancient hull - Sandra Mallinson, Bazaruto: Mozambique's Playground (Jan 2008)
