Rio Azul, which opened its doors in November 2007, is set on the shores of the Govuro River, about 130km north of Vilanculos.

Not only is this beautiful estuary the perfect place for a spot of fishing, it is also the kind of retreat where you can easily while away a relaxing afternoon on the wooden deck, listening to lapping waves and bird calls.

Keen fishermen will not want to leave; with good quality estuary fishing, brilliant surf fishing and some of the finest offshore fishing in Mozambique. Rio Azul also has experienced fishing guides, and each room has its own estuary boat.

Paddle a kayak up the mangrove channels, keeping an eye open for kingfishers, crab plovers and fish eagles. Alternatively, enjoy a sundowner cruise on a local dhow or take your private boat out for a bit of exploring and a riverside picnic.

The area also offers safe swimming and a bit of snorkelling in Mozambique's clear, warm water.

The dining room at Rio Azul looks out onto the estuary, and on warm evenings you can enjoy your meals al fresco on the lodge's wooden deck.

Accommodation at Rio Azul consists of 6 open thatched chalets. Rooms are tastefully decorated, with no frills comfort and a real "home away from home" feel.

Most rooms have twin, three quarter beds, and all have mosquito nets. Each chalet has a wooden deck overlooking the estuary.
