At the northern point of the Bay of Inhambane, the small peninsula of Linga Linga guards a beautiful stretch of calm water which was once used as the port for a whaling station. Blood no longer stains these waters, as the area is now a sanctuary protected from whalers and other plunderers.

Sea grasses grow thickly in the warm waters and attract strange, mermaid-like creatures called dugongs. Dugongs are seriously threatened in Mozambique. If you see one, count yourself lucky, and don't show it to the local fishermen, who would try to take it home for dinner.

The most exciting way to get to Linga Linga is by dhow from Maxixe. Dhows are sometimes very slow, but the experience of heading out to this estuary with a team of Mozambique's experienced pescadores (Portuguese for fishermen) is one to savour.
