This map of Mozambique shows a a ribbon-like country on the east coast of Africa, with a wide coastal plain stretching along 2 500km of warm Indian Ocean: from Ponta do Ouro in the south to the scattered islands of the Quirimbas Archipelago in the north.
Mozambique shares its southern border with South Africa and its western border with Zimbabwe and Zambia. Malawi penetrates Mozambique's northern territory; with both countries sharing the large body of water known as Lake Malawi (in Malawi) or Lake Nyasa (in Mozambique). Tanzania is Mozambique's northernmost neighbour.
You can fly in to Vilanculos; the gateway to the Bazaruto Archipelago (a cluster of 4 tropical islands in southern Mozambique) or to Pemba; the gateway to the more remote Quirimbas Archipelago (which is made up of 27 islands). Also in the north is the immense Niassa Reserve, a truly wild area of magnificent miombo forest - twice the size of South Africa's Kruger National Park.
