Maxixe, which is pronounced 'ma-sheish', is named after an African chief and lies across the bay from Inhambane on the main highway linking south and central Mozambique. It serves as the commercial centre for the region and although it doesn't have the charm of Inhambane, there are shops, petrol stations and places to eat.
Throughout the day dhows and ferries make their way between the two towns carrying people and their goods to and from work. The drive from Inhambane to Maxixe is a much longer round trip of about 60 kilometres.
