Combine fantastic beach rides with a bit of scuba diving, and a trip to the Bazaruto Archipelago. Horses are incredibly well trained, responding to verbal commands and a light touch. Choose a horse with the temperament to suit you riding ability - from energetic to 'bomb-proof'.
The selection of rides available varies from an hour to a week. Lodge hop down the coast or make Vilanculos your base. Sunset rides, breakfast rides or even island rides on Bazaruto or Berguerra - anything is possible.
Sample itinerary:
- Day 1: Settling in
- Itinerary
You are met at the airport and driven to your chalet at Archipelago Sun, situated on the outskirts of Vilanculos, overlooking the Indian Ocean and Bazzaruto Islands.
After a relaxing lunch it's time to meet the horses, and enjoy your first ride along the beach. Early evening drinks are served at the lodge, followed by a tasty seafood dinner hosted by Pat and Mandy.
- Day 2: Beach ride
- Itinerary
In the morning you set off for the stables, mount up and begin the ride along beautiful beaches and over high cliffs. Deserted stretches of sand, brilliant blue sea and the occasional dhow all make for an exhilarating and scenic ride.
A picnic lunch is served on the red cliffs with magnificent views of the bay and Bazaruto Archipelago, and the very real chance of spotting a pod of dolphins. After a day in the saddle, a well deserved dinner awaits you on your arrival back at the lodge.
- Day 3: Vilanculos Wildlife Sanctuary
- Itinerary
Today you go on a leisurely ride along the coast towards the Vilanculos Wildlife Sanctuary on the San Sebastian Peninsular.
This area is incredibly varied with scattered lakes and wetlands; patches of miombo woodland and extensive mangrove forests. The fantastic birdlife includes thousands of flamingos.
In the late afternoon you catch the boat back to Vilanculos, leaving the horses with the grooms. That evening you meet for a drink at the bar, before going to dinner at a lovely restaurant where they serve Mozambique's famous "Peri-Peri chicken".
- Day 4: Horses, birds & miles of beach
- Itinerary
An early start for your boat trip back to the Vilanculos Wildlife Sanctuary: look forward to dramatic scenery combined with long canters along many miles of sandy beach. This beautiful area is home to some of the richest biodiversity in Africa.
After a day in the saddle, you cool down with a much deserved thirst quenching drink at a lovely lodge. As the sunlight fades, cruise back over Mozambique's calm sea, leaving the horses to make their way home with the grooms the following day.
- Day 5: Across to Benguerra Island
- Itinerary
Today you board a traditional Arab dhow and set sail for the islands. It's hard not to feel content gliding across the calm waters of the Indian Ocean, towards the sandy beaches and palm trees of Benguerra.
The Bazaruto Archipelago is world renowned for pristine coral reefs. Spend the rest of your morning snorkelling, checking out the colourful world below the ocean's surface, and working up an appetite for a delicious picnic lunch on the beach. If you're lucky you may also spot whales, dolphins, turtles or even the shy and endangered dugong.
Pat and Mandy have a herd of horses based on Benguerra and, in the afternoon, you go for an exhilarating island ride. Explore from horseback the huge 100m sand dunes, freshwater lakes, mangrove swamps and sandy beaches of Benguerra.
- Day 6: Swimming and sunning
- Itinerary
A day of rest and relaxation, or exciting activities - the choice is yours. Spend your time swimming, sunbathing, or try a bit of scuba diving. The colourful coral reefs and clear waters around the Bazaruto Archipelago offer some of the best diving in the world!
Other popular activities include a spot of souvenir shopping at the nearby village, game fishing, a dhow cruise or a whale watching trip.
- Day 7: Exploring inland
- Itinerary
Today you saddle up and set out to explore more of the magnificent Vilanculos coastline. Apart from incredible beaches, you also follow natural trails inland, winding through uninhabited bush past countless lakes.
One of the day's highlights is taking the horses for a refreshing dip in the lake. Lunch is served under the trees on the water's edge. In the afternoon you make your way home along the coastline with spectacular views from the cliff tops across the sparkling sea.
- Day 8: A final gallop
- Itinerary
Get up early for a final morning ride. Head inland along streams, following interesting spoor and quietly looking for elusive species of bird and wildlife amongst the hills and tall golden grass. Then it's time to take your horses back down to the beach for a final brisk gallop, before heading home to check out of Archipelago Sun.
