Ibo Island is a unique destination, with a dark and fascinating history. Vasco da Gama landed on this remote Quirimbas Island in 1502, and its important historical and cultural value has led to potential World Heritage status.
The former seat of Mozambique's capital, many of the beautiful old 18th and 19th century Portuguese-built homes in this once fashionable town have long since been abandoned, and are now crumbling beyond repair.
Wandering Ibo's peaceful streets, past carved wooden doors and flaking paintwork, you are transported back to a time of slaves and ivory trading. A guided tour takes you to the grand old Catholic church, local school and the magnificent pentagonal fortress, with ancient canons still aimed out over the turquoise ocean.
You also gain unique insight into the vibrant blend of Swahili, Arab and Portuguese cultures: meet some of the local islanders and watch traditional silversmiths hand crafting delicate jewelry.
If you'd like to stay on this palm-fringed island, we'd recommend one of the beautifully restored villas at Ibo Island Lodge.
