Matemo is a beautiful and relaxing island getaway in the Quirimbas Archipelago, ringed by 8km of private beaches and countless coves.

This magical destination is known for its wide stretches of soft sand and great choice of fun activities, from kayaking to beach volleyball. Surrounded by coral reefs rich in marine life, Matemo also offers fantastic scuba diving, with new sites being discovered all the time.

It's just a 20-minute boat trip from Matemo to Ibo Island. A guided half-day tour of Ibo will take you through wide, quiet streets, past crumbling Portuguese and Arab architecture, to sturdy old forts. Remember to take along some extra cash, so you can buy a piece or two of Ibo's famous jewellery from the local silversmiths.

Being one for adventure and sports, I was pleased to be able to head off on my own enjoying sea kayaking, snorkelling and windsurfing. Although I don't like to sit around much, once I tried out the hammock at my suite and looked out at the postcard scenery, I felt quite at home in this amazing paradise! - Go2Africa Safari Expert Derek Boshard

The island is about a 25-minute flight from Pemba, and you can stay in one of Matemo Island Resort's thatched bungalows.

This is a good option for a family beach holiday, as the resort allows children, and there is plenty to keep them entertained should they tire of splashing about in the turquoise ocean.
