Matemo is a remote tropical island in the Quirimbas Archipelago. Whether you're looking for an active all-go holiday, or would prefer to simply laze about on a beach, you won't want to leave this Indian Ocean paradise.
The island is 8km long, and you can spend long, leisurely days exploring countless coves, as the warm ocean laps your feet.
A number of scuba courses are offered, and the surrounding ocean is a divers' paradise with colourful coral and unusually named fish like the two-tone dottyback and the humbug damsel. There are also excellent snorkelling sites off Matemo Island where you can appreciate the incredible marine life with its whales, dolphins and turtles.
Fishing can be enjoyed either by boat or from the beach, and there is a full range of motorised and non-motorised water sports available.
Matemo Island has a relaxed, informal feel, and is a good choice for a family beach holiday. There is an Activities Centre with a variety of beach games including volleyball and kiddies sandbuilding castles.
LocationMatemo Island is part of the Quirimbas Archipelago and is about 95km offshore from Pemba in northern Mozambique.
