The Namibian Constitution guarantees protection of the environment. Nearly 15% of the land in Namibia is set aside for conservation.
In the past, conservation areas were declared without any consideration for the people living in the area. Since independence, the government's conservation authorities have adopted a more holistic approach to the protection of the country's natural resources.
Community-based natural resource management gives control over the game and natural resources in an area to the area's local communities and landowners.
Through NGOs - such as the Namibia Nature Foundation - training and education is provided about waste management and initiatives that promote cooperative environmental management in communities.
The philosophy underpinning these initiatives is that socio-economic development is linked to sound environmental management. The initiatives provide incentives to communal conservancies to protect wildlife by allowing them to benefit from the natural resources and tourism.
