Perhaps the biggest attraction of Namibia is its diverse and fascinating environment. Home to a variety of plants and animals - including many endemics - most of Namibia's wildlife has adapted to the harsh conditions of the arid deserts and mountains.

But it's not all burning desert wastes: Namibia has a few surprises up its sleeve as well.

The ace is of course the enormous Etosha National Park with its famous game-packed waterholes and predator-rich grasslands - Etosha is particularly good for lion, spotted hyena and cheetah.

Look out for the interesting juxtaposition between classic savannah species such as elephant, zebra, impala and giraffe with arid area specialists like gemsbok and springbok - and Etosha remains probably the best place in Africa to see the endangered black rhino.

The wetter Caprivi region is where you'll find herds of buffalo and hippo in and along the densely vegetated rivers and swamps, and the drier winter months see huge herds of elephant moving in from the remote woodlands of the region.
