Despite the bleak, arid moonscapes that cover much of Namibia, it is also a country renowned for top game viewing in well-maintained wildlife parks and reserves. Indeed, Namibia's great tracts of wilderness ensure that you are likely to see game almost anywhere.

The flagship park is of course the Etosha National Park: 20,000 square kilometres of salt pan, grasslands and open woodland. Home to Africa's dry area specialists, expect to see elephants and black rhinos, big cats (it's a great place for lion and cheetah) and smaller predators, plus many species of antelope ranging from the stately gemsbok to the diminutive Damara dik-dik.

The roads often wind between waterholes where the game jostles for position while nothing quite beats the activity found at the large, permanent waterholes at Etosha's 3 camps. Here you will find comfortable seating overlooking the waterholes which are also floodlit at night to give visitors a taste of Etosha's bustling nightlife.

The Waterberg Plateau Park offers a totally different take on game viewing in that the animals are found on top of a plateau covered in beautiful grasslands and open woodland. Recent re-introduction programmes have seen impressive additions to the mammal list including white rhino, sable and roan antelope.

Those visitors who feel they are missing out on iconic African mammals such as hippos and buffalo may want to spend a few days in the more watered Caprivi Strip where the many rivers and swamps support the water-dependent species. Try the Caprivi Game Park where you will also be pleasantly surprised to find lush vegetation and excellent bird watching.
