Namibia's population has many languages. About half of Namibians speak Oshiwambo as a first language, but Afrikaans is the country's most widely understood language. The official language of Namibia is English, though it is only among the younger generation that this is widely understood.

English and Afrikaans are used for public communication, but many minor mother tongue groups prevail throughout the country. These include Diriku, Herero, Kwangali, Kwanyama, Lozi, Mbukushu, Nama, Ndonga, and Tswana. Most of the white population speaks Afrikaans or German as a first language.
