Explore the Etosha National Park

It's easy to see why the Etosha National Park is a household name: its shimmering white salt pan is surrounded by vast grassy plains and open woodlands, ideal habitat for the highest concentrations of game in Namibia. Set out at dawn to search for Africa's top predators and spend the afternoon relaxing at a waterhole while thirsty elephants scatter the drinking antelope, zebra and giraffe.

Adjoining private reserves provide excellent safari accommodation and the chance to do night drives and bush walks. We particularly like Ongava Tented Camp and Onguma Luxury Tented Camp - all the thrills but without the crowds.

Fly High over the Desert Dunes

It's what Namibia travel is all about: watch the sun rise from the most romantic spot in Namibia - the basket of a balloon sailing silently over the burning purples, reds and oranges of Sossusvlei's glowing dunes. Ghostly tree skeletons etched against the dunes and a lone gemsbok patrolling the pans complete the perfect picture.

Sossusvlei: bright red dunes, bright blue sky - and the only place I've experienced absolute silence! - Africa safari expert Monique Roden

Explore this evocative Namibia travel area from one of Sossusvlei's top-class lodges - we'd recommend Little Kulala where you can marvel at the dunes from the comfort of your bed or private plunge pool.

See the Ghostly Skeleton Coast

Forget the image of a beach holiday - stay at a remote lodge in the Skeleton Coast Park, a barren stretch of wilderness sandwiched between an icy, treacherous sea and a harsh, rugged desert interior. Huge seal colonies, foraging brown hyenas and a fascinating wealth of highly specialised flora and fauna can be found amid the forlorn shipwrecks that dot the coastline of the world's oldest desert.

Want to explore this classic Namibia travel area? Discover this lost world on the Skeleton Coast Explorer safari or our Remote and Wild adventure.

Accommodation is predictably scarce and remote, but a stay at Serra Cafema Camp or Skeleton Coast Camp will leave you in no doubt that there are some very special and luxurious places to stay on this forbidding coast.

Get your Adrenalin Fix at Swakopmund

Sip a cappuccino at a friendly coffee shop in bustling Swakopmund while waiting for the morning coastal fog to burn off, and then head off to the Namib Desert's rolling dune fields just out of town to indulge your taste for adrenaline. Adventure activities galore are on offer, including sand-boarding, quad-biking, skydiving and horse trails - should this not be enough, head to the beach for surfing or kayaking - who said Namibia travel was all about desolate deserts?

There's plenty of accommodation in Swakopmund - and nearby Walvis Bay -but with this much on offer, chances are you won't be spending much time inside.

Visit the Last Wild Frontier

The rugged, inhospitable terrain of the Kaokoveld gives way to the lifeline of water that is the Kunene River. A Namibia travel area that is slowly giving up its secrets, you will discover the baobabs of Epupa Falls and the ochre-painted Himba people, a proud tribe determined to preserve their traditional ways.

It's not the sort of place you can meander around by yourself: we recommend the superlative Serra Cafema Camp, deep in the desert, to give you a fantastic and professional experience.

The Kaokoveld for me was a true African experience: uncommercialised and overwhelming - Africa safari expert Rikke Williams

Discover the Beauty of Damaraland

Stay at Damaraland Camp, a very special luxury lodge owned wholly by the local community and managed by Wilderness Safaris. Damaraland offers an exceptional environment, explored through professionally guided excursions in 4X4 vehicles and on foot.

Track the endangered black rhino and the legendary desert elephants, discover Bushman art and marvel at fascinating geological features in this Namibia travel area of absolute isolation.

Uncover the Secret Caprivi

The Caprivi Strip is Namibia's version of the Okavango Delta. Its rivers and swamps are a welcome sight for hot and dusty desert travellers. Stop over for a few nights in one of the many lodges and private reserves to explore a little-visited area that boasts Namibia's best birdwatching as well as good game viewing. All this is set amid majestic riverine forest and tangled swamp vegetation, evoking a tropical ambience.

Try the excellent Lianshulu Main Lodge on the banks of the Kwando River - it's a naturalist's delight, located in the Mudumu National Park.
