You can arrive at the hot springs resort of Ai-Ais by car or by foot from the long, hot, 86km Fish River Canyon hike. Either way you'll want to discard your clothes and soothe your body in the therapeutic hot waters of the indoor or outdoor swimming pools and jacuzzi.
Ai-Ais is a Nama word meaning 'scalding hot', so expect water temperatures of around 60°C. The springs originate deep underground and are rich in minerals, which are reputedly good for those with rheumatic or nervous disorders. Ai-Ais falls within the Fish River Canyon conservation area and the hot springs are a public facility.
It is perhaps for this reason that they are not very exotic, nor is it a place you would normally stay for more than a few days. However, they are a welcome relief for sore, tired feet or for travellers who wish nothing more than to take relax in the waters.
The landscape is desolate, dusty and rock-strewn, with hills and chasms that are wonderful to explore on horseback.
Accommodation is offered in apartments, caravans or camping sites with the facilities of a shop and restaurant, filling station and tennis courts. Ai-Ais is closed over the summer from November to mid-March, as this barren area is just too hot and dry.
