The Diamond Coast area contains some of the most popular tourist destinations in Namibia. Very few visitors can resist a visit to the ghost town of Kolmanskop just outside of Luderitz.

Kolmanskop was established during the 1908 diamond rush, but it was deserted after richer diamond fields were discovered elsewhere. It is now a ghost town. Its houses - desolate, half-filled with sand, standing along windswept old streets - are a photographer's delight.

Lüderitz is a lovely town with German architecture, plenty of atmosphere and good restaurants where you can sample fresh seafood. On the desert plains of Aus, keep an eye open for the desert horses that roam this region. They are the world's only wild desert-dwelling horses and though their origins are much debated, no-one can dispute that they have adapted well to their harsh home.

The area also includes the southern part of the Namib-Naukluft Park, one of the largest protected nature reserves in the world.
