Situated in northern Namibia, the vast Etosha salt pan spans 5,000km2 of desert-like landscape with surrounding mopane and acacia scrubland and grasslands.
The area also includes the Etosha National Park, one of the greatest wildlife viewing parks in Africa. Depending on rain, the pan is either dry or filled with shallow water, which then attracts thousands of wading birds including flamingos to the glistening pans. The park has all of the "big five" and is not to be missed.
While in the area, make sure to visit Tsumeb, a town rich in minerals and metals, especially if you are interested in geology.
