The Fish River Canyon Conservation Area is not noted for its fauna or flora, but for its remarkable geological features.

Established in 1969 to conserve its geological marvels, it contains the spectacular Fish River Canyon (the second largest canyon in the world at 161 km long) and the Ai-Ais hot springs.

Wildlife is very sparse, though zebra, springbok and steenbok are sometimes seen. Vegetation is almost entirely dwarf shrub savannah, consisting mostly of thorn trees. But the canyon itself is by far the greatest attraction of the conservation area. It must not be missed.
