The Kunene Region is one of Namibia's thirteen administrative regions. It's home to the Himba ethnic group, a nomadic and pastoral people of about 12,000 individuals.
Kunene is one of the least developed of Namibia's regions, partly due to its inaccessibility and the inhospitability of its landscape. The capital, Opuwo, has less than 5,000 inhabitants.
The Kunene is one of the last truly wild regions of Africa, with a diversity of wildlife including desert elephants.
