The geography of Namibia
The Map of Namibia demonstrates the country's block-like, almost rectangular shape, broken only by the anomalous panhandle of the Caprivi Strip. An intriguing reminder of Namibia's colonial history, Caprivi provided its German masters with a route, or at least the beginning of one, to their East African colonies.
Namibia is, geologically anyway, an old country - some of its rocks are over 2 billion years old. It is also a country of different regions: the central hilly plateau with a dramatic, rugged escarpment that runs down into the coast and the world's oldest desert - the Namib. To the east lie the vast rolling vegetated dunes of the Kalahari stretching into Botswana.
Rainfall is at a premium in Namibia and will dictate the flora and fauna of a region. Much of Namibia is covered in semi-arid to arid scrub and desert, but there are large areas of forest and open wooded savannah in the better-watered north. The Caprivi Strip, in stark contrast, is an area of wetlands and rivers.
Each area represented on the map of Namibia is distinct and interesting - from the barren beauty of the Skeleton Coast through to the prime game viewing hotspot of the Etosha National Park. Namibia is also home to geological wonders such as the jagged Fish River Canyon and the legendary sand dunes of Sossusvlei.
