The Okavango River is one of few rivers in the world that does not empty into the sea. It has its source in the highlands of Angola (where it's known as the Cubango) and runs southeastwards until it drains into the Okavango Delta of Botswana. 1,600km long, it is the fourth longest river system in southern Africa.
The Okavango River forms part of the border between Angola and Namibia, and before flowing into Botswana the river suddenly falls four metres at the Popa Falls - actually a series of rapids - in Namibia's Caprivi region.
