The Orange River is a major river in South Africa. It runs along Namibia's southern border with South Africa, having risen in the Drakensberg mountains along South Africa's border wtih Lesotho at an altitude of about 3000m.
2200km in length, the Orange rises only 193km from the Indian Ocean, but eventually opens into the Atlantic Ocean at Oranjemund. It runs through mostly semi-desert and desert regions, and most people who visit it remember its path as a dramatic vein of lush, green life in an otherwise dry and barren landscape.
Some notable features of the Orange include the Augrabies Falls, a series of waterfalls in South Africa's Northern Cape, and the rapids on its path between Namibia and South Africa. Canoeing and rafting trips down this stretch of the Orange are a popular activity, and highly recommended by the author.
