Most of our overland tours are camping tours which gives an unbeatable flexibility. Accommodation is normally in spacious two-man tents equipped with a fly-sheet, built-in ground sheet and mosquito netting.

At the beginning of an overland Africa tour you and your tent buddy will be allocated a tent.

You will keep it throughout the trip and it's up to you - and your tent buddy - to look after it and keep it clean.

Don't worry if you've never pitched a tent before: the tour leader will give you a demonstration and before you know it you'll be an expert at pitching it - even in the dark.

Occasionally you'll need to help out and pitch the cook's tent if they are busy preparing supper. On most tours, you'll need to bring your own sleeping mat (this will be advised when booking) and sleeping bag.

If however you are setting off on an accommodated overland tour, then sleeping is the least of your worries. You'll stay in budget hotels, chalets, standard rest camps, lodges and even tented camps.

Dome tents and ground sheets are standard on camping trips, while those on accommodated departures get a twin bedroom, private or shared bathroom and often the luxury of the camp swimming pool...Kimberley Rood, Affordable Safaris - doing Africa on a Budget, July 2009.

Although a little more expensive, accommodated tours provide you with an extra bit of comfort at the end of the day. But if you want to total overland experience - we recommend a camping tour.

Some campsites have extensive and comfortable facilities while others are very basic.

The more established places have shared ablution blocks, taps, fire pits, rubbish bins, grassy or sandy camping sites, bars, restaurants and sometimes shops. All camping fees come out of the kitty.

At some camps there is also permanent accommodation in the way of huts, double rooms, or dorms.

If these are available, you can upgrade and sleep in a comfy bed for the night - you just need to pay the difference between the camping price and the cost of the accommodation.

Other sites, however, are little more than a patch of cleared ground and a long drop, but not knowing where - or how - you are going to sleep each night is all part of the overland adventure.

Occasionally, if there is no permanent campsite nearby or it's too late to continue driving, the vehicle will pull off onto the side of the road and bush camp.

As a rule, campsites in East Africa tend to be much more basic than those in southern Africa.

When travelling from the north to the south, the amenities get steadily better; while travelling south to north you may suddenly wonder where the swimming pool has gone.
