Overland Adventures » What is Overlanding? » Spending Money

On many of our tours you will need to pay a sum, often referred to as a local payment, which goes into a communal fund.

The pooled money is managed by the tour leader and it covers all the local expenses the tour encounters on a day-to-day basis: food, campsite charges and game park entrance fees and so on.

The payment is made to the tour leader at the pre-departure meeting or on the morning of departure.

In almost all cases it must be paid in US$ cash - this is the easiest currency to change for local currency in Africa. Please note that the tour leader cannot accept traveller's cheques or credit cards.

It's best to buy US$ in your own country before leaving home: dollars can be hard to find in Africa and in some regions there is the risk of getting counterfeits.

Since prices and exchange rates fluctuate, the local payment is not fixed. While the local payments given on our itineraries will give you an idea of the amounts required, they are subject to change.

Those tours that do not have a communal fund are usually the shorter tours within one country where prices are more fixed and can be included in the tour cost
