For a country way smaller than Belgium, Rwanda certainly packs it in as our Rwanda Wildlife Guide will show you.

Most famous for its gorilla trekking, Rwanda boasts a surprisingly diverse environment - and luckily much of its most important natural areas are protected by its 3 national parks, although it must be said that a growing Rwanda needs to address conservation issues with some speed.

Rwanda's northern rainforests dominate the tourist map but there are a number of different habitats ranging from open water to wooded savannah.

The country's location in the extraordinary Albertine Rift Valley means that Rwanda's wildlife and vegetation are something special.

Besides the mountain gorillas there is a great array of primates, and the birdlife will send twitchers into a spin with around 700 recorded species.

"It's both an honour and a privilege to be granted an audience with the last of the mountain gorillas. Alison went to Rwanda with one chance to get face to face with the mountain gorillas..." - Alison Westwood, Mountain Gorilla Trekking, December 2006.
