Byumba

60km north of Kigali- Rwanda's capital city - is the small town of Byumba. There are no major tourist attractions to speak of and most people only pass by here. Byumba is 3km off the main road between Kigali and the Ugandan town of Kibale. Those that do travel through here are mainly traversing from the Kigali main road to the Ruhengeri road, which they can pick up at Base.



The dirt road from Byumba to Base offers some of the most beautiful countryside in Rwanda as this is the major tea growing area.

The town of Byumba is, in many ways, a lovely appetizer for those moving on to the main course that is the Ruhengeri region; it goes down smooth but isn't nearly enough to satisfy a traveller's appetite.



There is a pleasant hotel in the town. Consisting of bungalow's set in a neat garden, the Hotel Urumuli offers clean rooms with en suite bathrooms, and hot water.
