This town is the tourist centre of Rwanda thanks to its proximity to the Volcanoes National Park. Situated at the base of the Virunga Mountains, this otherwise everyday city is set against a volcanic backdrop and is only 15 km from the neighbouring forest - home to round half the world's mountain gorillas.
Like most Rwandan towns, Ruhengeri has a colourful and lively market, and is conducive to casual strolls around town. There are a range of tourist facilities, with a surprisingly good selection of budget travel and accommodation. The climate is pleasantly moderate, and so are local temperaments.
Travel from Ruhengeri is convenient; it is less than 100km to Kigali, and about 60km to the beach town of Gisenyi.
