The Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) and are grouped into Inner and Outer islands.
Inner Islands is the collective term for the 42 islands that lie closest to Mahé, the largest island in the archipelago. Almost all of the inner islands are granitic with distinctive boulders and mountainous interiors. The granitic inner islands lie slightly to the north, and within a 56km radius, of Mahé Island.
North and Sillouette Islands lie to the northeast of Mahé. Praslin, the second largest island, and Aride Island lie almost directly north of Mahé, with Félicité, La Digue and Frégate a little further east. Bird Island and Denis are the only two coralline inner islands; they are located 90 km to the north of Mahé.
The Outer Islands are all coralline in nature. Although they make up 46% of the Seychelles landmass they are mostly inhospitable and only 2% of the Seychelloise live on the outer islands. No one said finding paradise should be easy and the Outer Islands are divided into 5 separate groups just so to complicate things a little further.
The Farquhar and Aldabra groups are located to the south-west of Mahé; the large group of Amirantes islands which includes Desroches Island are slightly closer to Mahé; the Alphonse Atoll lies to the south of Mahé; the isolated islands of Coëtivy and Ile Platte make up the Southern Coral Group and lie due south of Mahé.
