Roads

Cars drive on the left in Seychelles, although this means nothing to most local drivers who tend to roam all over the road, making rush-hour quite interesting. There are no pavements and the roads are often narrow which means that you have to be constantly on the look-out for pedestrians.

However, driving is said to be the best way to explore both Mahe and Praslin. Roads are generally good although they have deteriorated quite a bit in some areas, particularly en route to Anse La Blague and Anse Lazio. Speed limits are 40kph (25mph) in towns and villages and 65kph (40mph) everywhere else.

Public Transport

Buses are cheap and reasonably good but cater more for the local than the tourist. On weekends and public holidays, be prepared to stand and wait.

Metered taxis also roam the islands, although it is advisable to agree on the fare in advance to avoid an argument with the driver. Despite this, taxi drivers can be very helpful and, at the right price, make the perfect personal tour guides around the islands.

Bicycles are the other popular alternative and enable you to see the island at your own pace.

Ferries

Ferries are a popular form of transport between the islands and depending on your destination, you may have the choice between a fast catamaran or a more leisurely paced schooner.

There are several services daily on the Inter Island Ferry between Praslin and La Digue island. The journey takes approximately 30 minutes and rates are from about SCR13 per person each way. There is a ferry twice a day (in both directions) between Mahe and Praslin. The journey on the Cat Cocos takes about an hour and costs SCR40 for an economy class ticket.

Helicopter

You can transfer by helicopter between any of the following islands: Bird Island, Cousine, Denis Island, Felicite, Fregate, La Digue, Mahe, North Island, Praslin, Sainte Anne and Silhouette.

There are also landing pads at a number of the more remote, luxury resorts. Prices range from around SCR330 to SCR1,400 per charter depending on the route. Please contact one of our specialist vacation consultants for specific rates.

Did you know? Seychelles is scattered over an area of 1.4 million km2 of ocean. Considering that its many islands were once pirate hideouts - particularly Praslin's Cote d'Or and Anse Forbans (which means 'Pirates' Cove') on Mahe.
