Seychelles is in a healthy climate and there is no malaria, yellow fever, cholera nor many other tropical diseases. Some cautious doctors however will recommend typhoid and polio injections.

Those who have traveled to or through any affected area (including Kenya) within a week of coming to Seychelles are required to have certification of yellow fever vaccination. There is a possibility of rabies in certain parts of the country (although there have been no reported cases since 1994); visitors should consult with their physician about vaccination.

Although other vaccinations and preparations are generally unnecessary, visitors are advised to consult with their local Health Department.

Medical Services

Essential healthcare services are free of charge to Seychelles residents, while visitors are charged a small fee. There are a large number of local clinics, particularly on Mahe, although waiting times can often be frustratingly long. There is also a tourist doctor on Mahe who is on call 24 hours and will visit you at your hotel if necessary. Some hotels even have a small nursing staff on duty at certain times.

Victoria Hospital on Mahe is the main health factility and is well equipped. All doctors speak English and/or French. There are also small hospitals on Praslin and La Digue but all patients in need of immediate medical attention are taken to Victoria.

Water

Tap water meets World Health Organisation standards, but most visitors prefer to drink bottled water, which is widely available. Fruit and vegetables should be peeled and meat well-cooked before being eaten.

Dangers and Annoyances

Seychelles has very little crime but don't make the mistake of leaving valuables unattended on public beaches.

Wear old or plastic shoes when in the water to protect your feet against sea urchins, stone fish and sharp coral. Some beaches in the Seychelles have strong currents, so make sure you listen to local advice about swimming conditions.
