Called Zil Elwannyen Sesel by locals, Seychelles' Outer Islands are situated beyond the shallow Seychelles Plateau that encloses the Inner Islands. From Mahe island they range in distance from 230km to 1150km, and they're all made of coral rather than the volcanic granite of the inner islands.

There are five groups of Outer Islands:

  • The Southern Coral Group is made up of Ile Platte and Coetivy Island, with a total land area of 10 km2.
  • The Amirante Islands comprise three atolls, five single sand cays and three uplifted sand cays, with a total land area of 10 km2.
  • The Alphonse Group contains Alphonse Atoll and St Francois Atoll, with a total land area of 2km2.
  • The Aldabra Group comprises Aldabra and Cosmoledo Atolls and Assumption and Astove Islands, with a total land area of 176 km2.
  • The Farquhar Group contains Farquhar and Providence Atolls as well as St Pierre Island, with a total land area of 11 km2.

Taken together, the islands make up 46% of the Seychelles' total land area, but less than 2% of its population. These are truly deserted tropical islands, and if you have the opportunity to spend some time on one it is thoroughly recommended that you do.
